Do more business with less resources: optimize with OptaPlanner
The world is full of planning problems. Whether you’re scheduling employees to shifts, delivery routes to vehicles, aircraft/crews to flights, courses to timeslots/rooms or computer processes to servers, you want optimize your planning: maximize your business goals, minimize cost and adhere to all constraints. And you need to respond in real-time with the best planning as circumstances change - equipment breaks, the weather changes or staff call in sick. The difference between the best solution and your current feasible solution might be millions of dollars in costs or lost revenue.
OptaPlanner optimizes any planning problem with heuristic and metaheuristic algorithms. The input and output are plain POJO’s. The constraints are written in Drools Expert rules or plain old Java.
In the first part of this presentation, I'll explain the nature of planning problems, go through an entire OptaPlanner example, show some demo’s and compare the results of different optimization algorithms. In the second part of this presentation, I’ll explain the common score design techniques and try to explain the inner workings of some of the metaheuristic algorithms.
À propos des intervenants
Geoffrey de Smet
Geoffrey De Smet (Red Hat) is the lead and founder of OptaPlanner. Before joining Red Hat in 2010, he was formerly employed as a Java consultant, an A.I. researcher and an enterprise application project lead. He has contributed to many open source projects (such as drools, jbpm, pressgang, spring-richclient, several maven plugins, weld, arquillian, ...). Since he started OptaPlanner in 2006, he’s been passionately addicted to planning optimization.
